About the Review

Founded this morning, in a text editor, for reasons that are entirely technical.

Our masthead

The Marginalia Review is edited by nobody and printed nowhere. Its contributors are invented, its issues are notional, and its circulation is one developer with a browser console open. What it does have is four stable URLs and a tag stack arranged in the order Google and OneTrust both recommend.

Editorial policy

We publish essays of between six and twelve minutes, on the theory that anything shorter is a note and anything longer is a commitment. We do not run corrections, because we do not run facts.

Privacy, such as it is

This site loads Google Tag Manager and a OneTrust CookiePro banner purely so that their interaction can be observed. Consent Mode v2 defaults are set to denied before the container loads; nothing is written to analytics storage until the banner is accepted. Use the debugger in the corner to watch the state flip in real time.

Contact

Letters to the editor may be addressed to the void, care of this page. We read everything and reply to nothing.

What a correct sequence looks like

  1. Page loads with all consent types denied except security_storage.
  2. GTM fires; the GA4 tag sends a cookieless ping (consent state G100 in the request).
  3. OneTrust banner renders and the visitor accepts.
  4. OneTrust pushes a consent update; analytics_storage becomes granted.
  5. OptanonWrapper fires OneTrustGroupsUpdated into the dataLayer.
  6. The next GA4 hit carries a client ID and a full consent signal.
